Marina Teding van Berkhout
About Marina
Marina is a Dutch artist living in a small village near Grasse, in the South of France. She painted in watercolors for many years, but after discovering oil painting, and especially cold wax medium, she never looked back and became completely hooked on the medium. She loves the layered and intuitive process; scraping, scratching, and rebuilding are an important part of her work. She usually starts by building abstract backgrounds and lets her subjects emerge naturally. For her, the process is more important than the end result. Inspired by weathered walls, soft light, and her surroundings, she aims to capture emotion rather than perfection. Marina is passionate about painting faces, figures, and flowers, and enjoys sharing her passion with her students through online classes and in-person workshops. Her paintings are collected by collectors around the world.

Cold Wax, Oils & Matisse
In this in-depth class, Marina combines her passion for portraits with her love of cold wax and oils. Inspired by La Femme au Chapeau (1905) by Henri Matisse, we will explore bold color, layered surfaces, and expressive mark-making.
You will begin by building a vibrant, abstract background full of color and texture. From there, Marina will guide you step by step as a portrait slowly emerges from the surface.
This class is about texture, color, and trusting the process, letting the portrait reveal itself rather than forcing it. The final portrait will likely turn out very different form Matisse’s original painting of his wife Amélie, making your version uniquely yours!
Cold Wax: Texture, Scribbles and Depth
In this mini class, I will show you how to create depth in cold wax painting using texture, scribbles and transparent glazes.
We will begin with a textured base layer on paper and explore how we use texture- and drawing tools to add interest to the surface. Then I will demonstrate the difference between transparent and opaque layers, and how each one changes the painting.
