Rebecca Crowell

About Rebecca

Rebecca Crowell (Dixon, New Mexico) has been painting professionally for over 40 years. She is most well known for her complex, layered, organic abstractions created with oil paint mixed with cold wax medium, using techniques she originated about 20 years ago. These techniques are detailed in the comprehensive book she co-authored, Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts & Conversations (Squeegee Press 2017) which has become a resource for artists worldwide. A second edition will be published this year.

International travel for artist residencies and workshop teaching has been an important influence on her work. This includes annual residencies (since 2012) at The Ballinglen Arts Foundation on the rugged west coast of Ireland, and other art-related travel in Spain, Greece, Portugal, Sweden, and New Zealand. Since moving to Northern New Mexico in 2020, the dramatic landscape around her home has had a strong impact on her abstract vocabulary of colors, shapes and textures. Crowell’s work is included in hundreds of art collections–private, public, and corporate--and she exhibits regularly in galleries across the country and on a few occasions, internationally.

Abstracting With Intention: An Advanced Cold Wax Course

This course is about working with intention while creating layered abstract cold wax paintings. The focus is on combining intuition and exploration with a structure of core concepts and goals for the work.

The discoveries, spontaneous changes, and surprises that happen while building layers in cold wax medium paintings are exciting and a reason that many artists are drawn to using CWM. But while these explorations are important--helping you to understand the medium, create rich surfaces and build history into the work--they can also spread your focus thin and distract from developing an individual artistic voice.

This course offers insights into how to go deeper into the meaning and management of the outcome of your work, so that it can become more personal, consistent, and impactful. It will explore the use of intentions that are focused on short term goals, as well as those that are broader, encompassing what you most want for your work overall.
