Let’s explore adding texture and sculptural elements to encaustics.
Encaustics are made for texture! We will experiment with adding sculptural materials to build our creations up from flat to fabulous!
The wax itself invites layering, but what if we build forms first? Will that expand our creativity? Absolutely!
I will suggest several themes (flora, ocean, hearts), as a way to focus on what epoxy clay and other materials can offer. These materials are easy to use, and by the end of the lesson, you will not only have finished pieces, but more importantly you will have new ideas and new skills to continue to explore on your own.
Sgraffito: more fun with texture!
There are many ways to create textures in your encaustics, but have you tried sgraffito?
This ancient technique is simple – using a scratching method to reveal layers of color – but the results are dramatic! From subtle, delicate lines to deep groves, sgraffito can add a lot of drama! Let’s explore this technique together.
